His Excellency Professor Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai
Former Deputy Prime Minister and Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand
Professor Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai served as a Minister of Finance, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister and concurrently Acting Minister of Culture. He was Chairman of Government Policy Drafting Committee in 2001. He was an Adviser to several Prime Ministers and a Member of Parliament. He was the first Thai Foreign Minister who completed a four-year term of elected government. In 2004–2006, he was endorsed by ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) to be a candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. Between September 2011- July 2012 he was Adviser to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Thailand (TRCT), set up as a result of major political conflicts in Thailand. He is President of Saranrom Institute of Foreign Affairs Foundation (SIFAF), a think-tank on foreign affairs of Thailand.
He has been appointed by Chulalongkorn University Council as Distinguished Scholar for three consecutive terms. He is Advisory Board Member of the Institute for Global Law and Policy, Harvard Law School, Member of Asian Advisory Group of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, U.S.A. and a Member of the Executive Council of the Asian Society of International Law (ASIL).
He received his Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) with Honors and a Gold Medal Award from Chulalongkorn University, Master of Law and Diplomacy (M.A.L.D.) from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, a Master of Law (LL.M.) and a Doctorate (S.J.D.) from Harvard Law School.
His business experiences included chairing oil and gas, and refineries companies and a commercial bank and directors of several companies. At present he is Chairman of Siam Premier International Law Office Ltd. and also Chairman of Pepsi-Cola (Thai) Trading Co., Ltd.
His academic career included positions as Professor of Law, Director of Law and Development Research Center, Dean of the Faculty of Law and now a Distinguished Scholar, Chulalongkorn University. He was a Visiting Professor at Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University, a member of the Global Agenda Council on Global Institutional Governance, World Economic Forum, a Visiting Scholar at the European Law Research Center, Harvard Law School, and a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. He has published in both Thai and English on international economic law and law and development.
